Asked to sum up his season in a single word, Paul Townend instantly opted for "surreal".

The 28-year-old rode 109 winners in Ireland, helped himself to five Grade 1s, celebrated two Cheltenham Festival winners and granted Willie Mullins his lifetime wish by winning the Gold Cup on Al Boum Photo, so you could not blame him.

Wednesday might have been about Ruby Walsh but on Saturday the spotlight shone on his successor. This was Townend's time.
