The festival is back, with a difference. No jockey’s name has been cheered more loudly or more often at the meeting, but Ruby Walsh will not again be passing the post, stood upright in the irons, gesturing in victory at the crowd.
That was a familiar sight in this race but near-normal festival service could still be resumed via Walsh’s old mucker Willie Mullins. His Asterion Forlonge is described as a stayer with rather disconcerting frequency for his backers in this 2m race but he is also the top-rated entry thanks to winning by nearly ten lengths in a Grade 1 over 2m on yielding ground at Leopardstown.
