Sandown hope Eminent puts rider in hospital with broken hip
A few days after breaking 40mph in a gallop, Coral-Eclipse hope Eminent’s high spirits took an unfortunate turn as he hospitalised his work-rider Glen Osborne.
The Derby fourth, who clocked 40.2mph during a workout last Wednesday, remained so full of himself on Monday at the local Severals trotting ring that he briefly got loose after throwing off Osborne, who suffered a broken hip.
Trainer Martyn Meade said of his 7-2 third favourite: "Eminent's in fantastic shape but the same can't be said for poor old Glen, who's had to have a replacement hip. The horse was just so full of himself that he reared and Glen went down. Hopefully he'll be back."
Eminent will be partnered by Silvestre de Sousa for the first time at Sandown and Meade revealed the colt may also have a change of running style.
He explained: "We don't think holding Eminent up allows him to use his long stride so we may have him up there early serving it up to them."
The participation of Jack Hobbs may hinge upon thunderstorms forecast for the area on Thursday, with clerk of the course Andrew Cooper saying on Tuesday the track – currently good, good to firm in places – could get anything from no rain at all to 20mm.
Jack Hobbs found the ground a bit lively for him at Royal Ascot last time when producing a slightly below-par effort behind Highland Reel and Decorated Knight in the Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes.
Despite finishing last of the eight runners, Jack Hobbs was beaten only five and a half lengths by the winner and Gosden is hopefuls of turning the tables on a few in front of him that day.
Before his Ascot disappointment, Jack Hobbs had thrived on yielding ground at Meydan in March, when he ran out an emphatic winner of the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic. Owned by Godolphin and partners, Jack Hobbs looked to have taken his recent exertions in his stride when working on the Limekilns in Newmarket on Tuesday morning.
Gosden said: "We've left Jack Hobbs in the Eclipse and if they get the thunderstorms they say are on their way he's an intended runner. It was a bit too quick for him at Royal Ascot and if we'd waited with him for the King George we could find it's pretty much the same surface again. He seems in good shape and has winning form at Sandown."
Jim Crowley, former rider of Eminent, is to be reunited with Ulysses, whom he partnered at Royal Ascot to finish third in the Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes, while Olivier Peslier will take over on Decorated Knight, who will be bidding to give in-form trainer Roger Charlton a second win in the race following Al Kazeem in 2013.
The vacancy on the 7-1 fourth favourite comes about as his regular jockey Andrea Atzeni has been claimed by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid to ride for Roger Varian at Haydock the same afternoon.
