Chester used to start this meeting with the course at its narrowest configuration and move the rail out each day, but they reversed that policy with the first Friday Chester Cup 12 months ago.

That might be okay when the ground is good or quicker, but with the rail moved in four yards each day, it now means the shortest route will provide fresh ground not cut up by racing on a rain-softened surface the day before.
