Little downside to unknown quantity

Richard Pankhurst
3.10 Goodwood
Buy at 3 on index

Galileo Gold, The Gurkha and Awtaad are three of the top
three-year-old milers in Europe and they could well prove too young and progressive in the Sussex Stakes. It would be no surprise if they were to fill the first three places.

That said, they have pretty much finished within a couple of lengths of each other when they have met this season and all three races were on ground with a fair amount of cut – which they might not have here. Even if that makes them no more than an average Classic generation it might be enough to see off a few rivals who could be out of their depth in Group 1 company, but if they are not an exceptional trio it wouldn’t require a great deal of improvement from one of the others to upset the applecart.

Richard Pankhurst is obviously a risky proposition going without the hood he has worn to his two victories, but he remains a bit of an unknown quantity and at 3 on the index there is little downside.

He was considered a potential Classic colt after an impressive win in the 2014 Chesham, but injury cut short his campaign and restricted him to two outings in 2015. His reappearance in a Group 2 at Ascot this month was no more than satisfactory, although the form has been boosted with the runner-up and seventh – the only two who have run since – both winning.
