Horses who are 23-race maidens are not everyone's cup of tea, but there will hopefully be a bit of added juice in the price as a result and under ideal circumstances it could be time for Doublethetrouble to break his duck in the BetUK. It's Where The UK Bets Handicap (8.00) at Southwell.
Four second places in a row may set alarm bells ringing further, but there was nothing wrong with any of those runs and they represent strong form at this level.
The five-year-old was second over 2m½f here four runs ago, a length and three-quarters behind Our Scholar, who was taking advantage of a lowly Flat mark having improved markedly over hurdles. The selection was keen under an apprentice next time when he was reeled in late over 2m at Kempton.
His penultimate run came in a slowly run affair at Newcastle when caught away from the favoured stands' rail where the main action unfolded, while last time out he was nabbed late by Eagle's Realm when again making his own running over this 1m6f trip at Wolverhampton.
Eagle's Realm has won twice since, and collateral form with that one gives Doublethetrouble the edge over Kiss My Face here, while he finished ahead of Natacata when they both ran at Newcastle despite being away from the main action and is 2lb better off.
Natacata is likely to prove popular after an eyecatching run last time, and trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam is a striking 5-10 here with three-year-olds, but with some likely pace angles in Savvy Brilliance and Kiss My Face I would rather side with Doublethetrouble to finally get off the mark.
In the concluding Boost Your Acca-Fenwa With BetUK Handicap (8.30), Bohemian Breeze appears to have a strong chance of notching his fourth win from his last six starts with a 2lb rise for a cosy win at Wolverhampton last time unlikely to prevent a follow up.
He seems to have been a work in progress for much of this year, despite the wins, with a tendency to pull hard sometimes costing him. The penny seemed to drop last time, though, as he settled off a slow pace before comfortably accounting for reliable yardstick Way Of Life.
This 0-75 represents a drop in class and a 2lb rise for that victory seems lenient. His dam was second in a Group 1 so there could be plenty more to come from him, and trainer Charlie Johnston has a 37 per cent strike-rate with three-year-olds at this course.
If Ffos Las beats the weather there looks to be a very solid bet in the Join Our Vickers Free Spins Club Handicap Hurdle (2.52) in the shape of John Betjeman, who absolutely loves this venue and goes on any ground.
His record here over jumps is three wins, two seconds and a third from six runs, and includes four of his top six runs on Racing Post Ratings, as well as his latest win in March which came on heavy ground.
With all three of those wins coming under conditional riders, the 7lb claim of jockey William Maggs, who has won on two of his last four rides, could prove invaluable.
Last-time-out winner Grain D'Oudairies and the often well-backed Milldam will hopefully mean John Betjeman is overlooked enough to make him an each-way bet to nothing.
Kraqueline can put her last run behind her In the Woolston Novices' Handicap Chase (3.15) at Wincanton, and if she can display the form she showed on her seasonal and chase debut over course and distance in October she could be very hard to beat.
Small errors found her out in a better race at Warwick last time when she lost ground at vital stages of the race at that tricky jumping venue.
Back at the scene of the six-year-old's sole victory and with the prospect of an improvement in her jumping against more moderate opposition, she can get back to winning ways.
