Tottenham vs Manchester United predictions
Manchester United and Tottenham are 16th and 17th in the Premier League but the two clubs have a chance of redemption in Wednesday's Europa League final in Bilbao.
The all-English showdown comes as little surprise to bookmakers, who rated Spurs as 5-1 ante-post favourites ahead of 11-2 shots United, with Roma next in the betting at 9-1.
More of a shock is the fact that only relegated Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton are below the Europa League finalists in the Premier League standings.
United are guaranteed their worst league position since they were relegated in 1974 while Tottenham, top-half finishers in 19 of the past 20 seasons, are one place below them.
Even winning the Europa League may not be enough to save Ange Postecoglou's job. Bet365 make him 4-1 to be Spurs manager on the first day of next season, behind former Ajax coach Francesco Farioli and Burnley boss Scott Parker at 7-2.
"I always win things in my second year," declared Big Ange after September's 1-0 derby defeat to Arsenal and Spurs are capable of delivering on that promise against Ruben Amorim's Red Devils.
Tottenham have won all three league and cup meetings with United this season and the availability of their first-choice defensive unit is a major boost to their hopes at San Mames.
Postecoglou has all too rarely been able to field his preferred back four of Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie in front of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
That rearguard can lay the foundation for more success against a United side who lost 3-0 to Spurs at Old Trafford in September, when Bruno Fernandes was sent off in the first half, and 1-0 in February's return league fixture.
Ignoring matches against the bottom three, United have scored only 26 goals in 31 league games this season although their recent Europa League ties have been more expansive.
They needed an astonishing comeback to knock out Lyon in the quarter-finals, scoring three goals in the final six minutes of extra-time to go through 7-6 on aggregate.
United breezed past Athletic Bilbao in the semis, although Athletic were hampered by an early red card in the first leg and the absences of injured forwards Nico Williams, Inaki Williams and Oihan Sancet for the trip to Manchester.
Tottenham's Premier League games are often frantic, chaotic affairs but they have displayed more defensive solidity and smarter game management in Europe.
They stood firm in an impressive 1-0 quarter-final second-leg victory at Eintracht Frankfurt and eased through their semi-final tie against Bodo/Glimt, winning 2-0 on an artificial surface in Norway to wrap up a 5-1 aggregate success.
Injuries continue to frustrate Postecoglou and Amorim but Spurs should be solid with Rodrigo Bentancur patrolling in front of their first-choice defence.
Dominic Solanke, Heung-Min Son, Brennan Johnson, Richarlison and Wilson Odobert offer them more of an attacking threat than United and Tottenham may well enjoy a memorable night at the end of a forgettable season.
