Many people will glance at Kempton’s Wise Betting @racingtv.com Handicap Hurdle (2.00) and immediately be attracted to topweight Destroytheevidence.
The lightly raced five-year-old represents the red-hot Kim Bailey stable and tackles his first handicap off an official mark of 122, the rating he was given prior to romping to success by 15 lengths in a Kempton novice hurdle last month.
However, that race rather fell apart and likely short odds are based almost entirely on potential, not what Destroytheevidence has achieved.
We can take him on with last-time-out Plumpton scorer Baddesley, who will find the step up to this 3m½f trip on good ground ideal having only been raised 3lb for a commanding length defeat of Copshill Lad earlier this month.
Baddesley was by far the last off the bridle that day and should enjoy the return to Sunbury, having finished an excellent third to Love Actually in a novice handicap chase there in February when rated 107.
In effect he competes off 102, when Freddie Gordon’s highly valuable 5lb allowance is taken into consideration, and will receive 20lb from Destroytheevidence.
Two of trainer Matt Sheppard’s last three runners have been victorious which, in theory at least, enhances the chance of his unexposed five-year-old Little Pi producing a career-best performance in Ludlow’s Flowfit Handicap Hurdle (1.05).
The son of Dunaden shaped with significant promise on just the fifth start of his career – and first in handicaps – when fourth to Asian Spice at Exeter this month.
Sent off at 33-1, he belied those odds when coming from well off the pace to challenge for the lead three out. By no means helped by being bumped by runner-up Danton at the penultimate flight, his effort rather flattened out in the closing stages and he finished fourth, but it was still a much-improved effort.
Little Pi has only 10st 4lb to carry and receives a significant amount of weight from eight of his 11 opponents.
Few would be shocked if one of those rivals, the Tony Martin-trained Irish raider Alphonse Le Grande, proved ahead of the game off 98, but Little Pi, dropped 1lb since Exeter, has the profile of a quiet improver and merits an each-way bet at potentially decent odds.
Milanese Rose, who tackles the Marsh Commercial Novices’ Handicap Chase (1.40), is another who could reward each-way support at a big price.
The 17-race maiden was due to make her debut over fences at Worcester last month, with Harry Cobden an eyecatching booking.
Cobden, of course, has a plethora of high-class horses to ride for his boss Paul Nicholls this season and is also chasing the jump jockeys’ title. Common sense dictates that he must have been assured by trainer Neil Mulholland that the 73-rated Milanese Rose jumps well at home and was expected to run a big race.
Withdrawn on the morning of that race owing to unsuitable ground, the selection could outrun her expected odds at Ludlow in the hands of Harry Kimber.
While lacking consistency over hurdles, the mare has shown enough ability to win a race, and perhaps the switch to chasing will bring out the best in her.
She is related to King’s Odyssey and Sandymount Rose, who achieved peak chase ratings of 147 and 132 during their careers.
Milanese Rose finished a place in front of Justshortofabubble – likely to be one of the Ludlow market principals – when seventh at Warwick in December 2021, and now reopposes on 11lb better terms.
Desque De L’Isle and Not Available, who lock horns in the £15,000 Flowfit Handicap Chase (2.50), have plenty of history. The former, who boasts form figures of 311 at Ludlow, was beaten four and a half lengths by Not Available on his sole defeat at the track in December 2021.
Venetia Williams' ten-year-old is 8lb better off with Not Available based on that run and renews rivalry on 16lb more favourable terms judged on their Wincanton clash in January.
With the Williams team in flying form, Desque De L’Isle, who carries a nice racing weight of 10st 10lb, can take a huge step forward from his Huntingdon reappearance third behind Mr Grey Sky now back at his favourite venue, and he can notch a sixth career success.
