Day ten preview

It's day two of the Wimbledon quarter-finals and while Rafael Nadal has been man of the year on the courts in 2022, the pace ramps up big-time for the Spaniard with a clash against Taylor Fritz - and then possibly Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic on the horizon - in his attempt to win the first three Grand Slams of the year.

In the women's singles, meanwhile, Simona Halep is giving her backers plenty of excitement in her bid to become a two-time Wimbledon champion. The former world number one, who thrashed Serena Williams in the 2019 final, is going to some stopping in the remaining days of the London major.

Cristian Garin v Nick Kyrgios

Cristian Garin pulled off a blinding result when fighting back from two sets down to oust Alex de Minaur in the last 16 of the men's draw, but the learning curve steepens for the Chilean number one when he takes on Nick Kyrgios.

Garin looks the best player his country has produced since 2007 Australian Open finalist Fernando Gonzalez and he's a force on any terrain when on top of his game.

But Kyrgios is building an impressive CV of victims at Wimbledon and he's also showing enhanced levels of fitness at the All England Club this year, probably in response to criticism of his less-than-impressive record in five-set encounters.

That factor could theoretically still aid Garin's cause, but Kyrgios has such a brilliant array of serves and groundstrokes that the Australian firebrand looks a level above his opponent.

He showed quality and nerve to upend Stefanos Tsitsipas in the last 16, and let's not forget he's previously beaten such luminaries as Rafael Nadal and Milos Raonic in the London major.

After winning the Aussie Open doubles this year with good friend Thanasi Kokkinakis, Kyrgios seems to mean business and the favourite is expected to triumph in three or four sets.

Taylor Fritz v Rafael Nadal

Nadal unsurprisingly made light work of downing Botic van de Zandschulp in the last 16, but a meeting with Taylor Fritz could prove a lot tougher.

It has already been a landmark campaign for Fritz, who surprised Nadal in the final of the Indian Wells Masters in March.

Much depends on how the Californian slow-burner, a fine talent himself, approaches his latest date with the Spaniard. But put simply, Fritz is now good enough to live with the veteran Majorcan on a fast court and even if he comes up short against Nadal, he should ensure that a close battle is fought.

Punters can take a chance on Fritz franking the form of their desert final, which gave the 24-year-old his first taste of Masters Series 1,000 glory. But getting with the outsider either to win at least a set or on the total-games handicap may better suit punters.

Ajla Tomljanovic v Elena Rybakina

Ajla Tomljanovic is getting better and better and closer to fulfilling her Grand Slam wishes, but the 29-year-old may find Elena Rybakina too hot to handle in their last-eight rumble.

Tomljanovic fought back well to thwart Iga Swiatek's conqueror Alize Cornet 4-6 6-4 6-3 in the last 16, while Russia-born Kazakh Rybakina dismissed Petra Martic in straight sets.

Tomljanovic will hope to get a grip on her quarter-final the way she did in her previous singles outing. But Rybakina, 23, is also improving nicely and may not be as accommodating to her Croatia-born opponent.

Their only previous meeting, on the clay in Madrid last year, saw Rybakina triumph 6-4 6-0 but that result may not be that informative as Tomljanovic is a much more effective performer on a grass court.

While Tomljanovic could trouble her opponent, it's likely her All England Club campaign will end at the last eight stage for a second year running.

Simona Halep v Amanda Anisimova

Simona Halep is the player to beat in the women's singles draw with Iga Swiatek having departed the competition early and while the 2019 champion faces a potentially tough test of her title credentials against the seriously talented Amanda Anisimova, she looks to be playing well enough to find a way to prevail.

Anisimova has already seen off Cori Gauff, but a date with Halep looks a huge test for the American given the way the Romanian is performing under new coach Patrick Mouratoglou, who was Serena Williams' former advisor.

Anisimova made the semis of the French Open in 2019, however this is the furthest she has travelled in a fast-court Slam. That said, the 20-year-old does look more dangerous on faster courts, although her best terrain may still be regular hard courts.

Halep is playing well and thrashed Paula Badosa 6-1 6-2 on Monday. It wouldn't be a huge surprise to see Anisimova win a set, but taking two against the red-hot Romanian may be a bridge too far.
