Day two preview

Nick Kyrgios v Ugo Humbert

Nick Kyrgios blamed a reported neck injury for his failure to contest any of the Wimbledon prep tournaments on grass but it would not be a surprise to see the Australian turn up in good shape for his All England Club opener against Ugo Humbert.

French seed Humbert is a decent player and bounced back from a poor run to win the Halle title on grass recently.

He clearly likes the surface and has been made a fairly warm favourite to come through his Wimbledon opener, but Kyrgios may have other ideas.

If the Canberra native, who has played hardly any competitive tennis during the pandemic, has prepared well for his latest return to main-tour action there should be only one winner of this match.

Kyrgios, 26, is now in his prime, while Humbert, 23, remains a novice-like performer on court.

And punters would do well to recall how well Kyrgios played when he competed in Acapulco in 2019, defeating Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka, John Isner and Alexander Zverev on the way to lifting the title.

Kyrgios, who is referring to this London trip as a vacation, edged Humbert in five sets in the Australian Open in February before falling in another decider to Dominic Thiem in Melbourne.

That will have shaken the cobwebs off Kyrgios and it's quite feasible that the world number 60 could be a serious title contender in London this year.

Taylor Fritz v Brandon Nakashima

Brandon Nakashima is one of the most exciting performers to emerge from the USA in recent years, but it's still amazing to see the qualifier rated a fairly warm favourite to silence his countryman Taylor Fritz in his Wimbledon opener.

Fritz is going places, although not in a hurry, but it's difficult to know how to best support the Californian.

Rather than back Fritz directly to fare better than the bookies expect, the two other options look to be to go over the total games in the late 30s or back the clash to feature at least one tiebreak.

There were no prices available about a 7-6 set yesterday afternoon, so early-birds may have to make do with going over the games at 38.5.

Yasutaka Uchiyama v Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz, like Nakashima, is another well-hyped performer and it will be interesting to see how the Spanish teenager takes to grass after some encouraging efforts on his preferred clay.

The markets look to have slightly overrated Alcaraz's chance against the more experienced Japanese lucky-loser Yasutaka Uchiyama and having an interest on the outsider to fare better than expected could be prudent.

Alcaraz will do well to dismiss his opponent in straight sets and if the clash goes long, the favourite might be far from certain to prevail.

Aliona Bolsova v Paula Badosa

Paula Badosa has been the it girl in women's tennis this year and the Spaniard has worked wonders to step things up under coach Javier Marti.

Physically she's not the most powerful of performers but her groundstrokes and self-confidence have improved tremendously.

But with her preferred clay behind her for a while, Badosa may be overrated for her clash with compatriot Aliona Bolsova.

The outsider really is a power-pack and one day soon the planets may align for Bolsova, who looks worth backing with a generous handicap start.
