Grass is a surface on which big servers thrive and last year’s runner-up Kevin Anderson could be set for another fruitful fortnight at Wimbledon.

Only a determined Novak Djokovic stood in the way of Anderson and his first taste of Grand Slam success at the All England Club last year and the towering South African should at least be eyeing another shot at the semi-finals.

Gael Monfils, Roger Federer and John Isner were among Anderson’s list of victims 12 months ago and his early opponents could struggle to contain his fiery serve.

Anderson’s ability to reel off service games quickly is extremely effective and the short and snappy points ensure he can preserve his energy.

The 33-year-old didn’t have much of an impact at Queen’s Club earlier this month - he lost in three sets to Gilles Simon in the second round - but he was a first-round casualty in Kensington in 2018 and that didn’t hamper his Wimbledon credentials.

That appearance should have sharpened him up and providing he comes on for it, he could be a good bet at 13-2 to win the second quarter.

His main market rivals are Alexander Zverev and Milos Raonic but there are reasons to oppose both of them.

The pressure surrounding a Grand Slam tends to get to German youngster Zverev, who has yet to go beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon and can often let his emotions get the better of him.

Zverev was beaten in a five-set thriller by limited Latvian Ernests Gulbis in the third round last year and early exits in recent home events in Halle and Stuttgart don’t bode well.

Raonic has been plagued by injuries and it is difficult to know what shape he will be in having been forced to retire in Stuttgart and lost to Feliciano Lopez in the quarter-finals at Queen’s Club.

Anderson has a tricky opener against Pierre-Hugues Herbert but overcoming that should fill him with plenty of confidence and he looks the man to beat in what is a wide-open second quarter.

Djokovic is fancied to justify odds-on favoritism in the first quarter, while Federer should also do the business in the fourth quarter.

Rafael Nadal looks the most vulnerable of the market protagonists, with Marin Cilic, Dominic Thiem and the quirky Nick Kyrgios all notable dangers.
