Day nine preview

Cameron Norrie is the last Briton standing in the Wimbledon singles draw and the world number 12 will be hoping he can handle the pressure of home expectations as he battles with Belgian David Goffin for a place in the semi-final.

Norrie has profited from the early exit of seeded stars Casper Ruud and Hubert Hurkacz in the second quarter and is 4-9 to convert the chance he has been gifted with a quarter-final victory over Goffin.

The British number one has won three of his four Wimbledon assignments in straight sets and is 25-1 to go on and emulate the achievement of Andy Murray, who claimed the second of his two grass-court majors in 2016.

The bookmakers believe victory for Norrie would see him tee up a semi-final showdown with Novak Djokovic, who is 1-9 to see off Italian youngster Jannik Sinner and 4-11 to be crowned Wimbledon champion for a seventh time.

Women’s title favourite Ons Jabeur is also in quarter-final action as she meets Marie Bouzkova while there is an all-German affair taking place as veteran Tatjana Maria tackles her younger compatriot Jule Niemeier.

Novak Djokovic v Jannik Sinner

Djokovic has his eyes firmly set on a fourth successive title at the All England Club and the super Serb is a skinny price to see off the quarter-final challenge of Sinner.

While Djokovic should get the job done, the bookmakers’ quotes look a little dismissive of the impressive Italian and he can serve up a serious test of the top seed’s title credentials.

Sinner’s grass-court game came into question in the build-up to Wimbledon but he served superbly in a straight-set win over John Isner in round three and followed that up with a four-set triumph over fellow rising star Carlos Alcaraz.

There is no reason to think Sinner will shy away from the challenge now faced with former world number one and, although defeat looks likely, he can get a set on the board just as Soonwoo Kwon and Tim Van Rihtjoven did when losing to the Serb in earlier rounds.

David Goffin v Cameron Norrie

Norrie is featuring in his first Grand Slam quarter-final but the Briton looks a justifiably red-hot favourite to see off Goffin.

The Belgian, who is 46 places lower than his opponent in the world rankings, is going to have a vocal home crowd against him and he hasn’t had much recovery time from Sunday’s epic five-set win over Frances Tiafoe which went on for four hours and 37 minutes.

Norrie, who was on court for half that time in his straight-sets win over Tommy Paul last time out, should prevail but quotes of 4-9 carry little incentive to bet.

Marie Bouzkova v Ons Jabeur

Despite having never made a Grand Slam semi-final, Jabeur is favourite to lift the Venus Rosewater Dish and the talented Tunisian can stamp her authority against Marie Bouzkova.

Disregarding the dominance of Iga Swiatek, Jabeur has been one of this season’s standout performers and her title triumph in Madrid in May was the biggest win of her career.

The world number two built on that with another trophy success on the grass of Berlin in her preparations for Wimbledon and she should have a significant class edge on Czech challenger Bouzkova.

Jabeur has won all four of her matches at this year’s Championships in straight sets - her latest win over Angelique Kerber’s conqueror Elise Mertens being the most impressive - and she could repeat the trick here.

Tatjana Maria v Jule Niemeier

Not many would have seen this all-German affair coming and although this is uncharted territory for both players, they are in the quarter-final on merit.

Tatjana Maria has dumped out seeded Maria Sakkari and Jelena Ostapanko while Jule Niemeier overcame world number three Anett Kontaveit before silencing the home crowd in victory over Heather Watson.

Picking a winner isn’t easy and although backing the match to go to three sets makes somes appeal, this a trappy contest perhaps best left alone.
