Day eight preview

A place in the quarter-final at this year’s Wimbledon is the prize for Monday’s victors and it is 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal and 2019 All England Club heroine Simona Halep who will be the leading attractions.

Nadal is expected to make light work of Botic van de Zandschulp and keep his hopes of a calendar Grand Slam alive and although Halep is faced with a sterner test against Paula Badosa, the Romanian should seal her place in the last eight, too.

There are no Brits on show but Australia are represented strongly with Nick Kyrgios, Alex De Minaur, Jason Kubler and Ajla Tomljanovic all bidding to extend their stay in SW19.

Cristian Garin v Alex De Minaur

Matteo Berrettini’s forced withdrawal threw the third quarter wide open and Australian ace De Minaur can capitalise by reaching the quarter-final with a smooth success over Cristian Garin.

Garin had been set to meet last year’s Wimbledon runner-up Berrettini in round one but has profited from the Italian’s absence, dropping just one set across wins over Elias Ymer, Hugo Grenier and Jenson Brooksby.

However, tackling a fired-up De Minaur is a different ball game and Garin knows that all too well.

These two have fought three times in the past and De Minaur has prevailed in straight sets on each occasion.

And the most recent encounter, which took place on the turf of Eastbourne exactly two weeks ago, is the most telling as the Aussie eased to a 6-3 6-3 success.

If anything, De Minaur appears to have upped his game at Wimbledon and he looked seriously impressive in wins over British pair Jack Draper and Liam Broady.

This may look tougher on paper but, for all last week’s success, Garin would still be much happier on clay and he has never gone beyond this stage of a Grand Slam in 14 previous attempts.

De Minaur should get the job done and he can do it a shade cosily, with his third straight-set triumph of the tournament making plenty of appeal at even-money.

Alize Cornet v Ajla Tomljanovic

Alize Cornet sent the winning machine and world number one Iga Swiatek packing in the previous round of Wimbledon, and did so with authority as she prevailed 6-4 6-2.

However, for all her recent dominance, Swiatek still had a bit to prove on grass and punters shouldn’t be expecting Cornet to have another easy ride against Ajla Tomljanovic.

The Australian was a quarter-finalist at the All England Club last year and she has dealt particularly well with a tough passage this time around, having dumped out seeded players Jil Teichmann and Barbora Krejcikova.

Tomljanovic showed great character as she fought from a set down to overcome former French Open champion Krejcikova and another marathon contest could be on the cards against Cornet.

Interestingly, the Aussie defeated Cornet in three sets in the second round at SW19 last year and their meeting prior to that on the fast courts of Melbourne also went the distance.

Amanda Anisimova v Harmony Tan

An opening-round victory over legendary figure Serena Williams, as well as a dominant 6-1 6-1 display over Karolina Pliskova’s conqueror Katie Boulter, show Harmony Tan is no weak link.

However, Amanda Anisimova, who at 20 is four years younger than Tan, looks a star in the making and there was a lot to like about the way she came from behind to defeat compatriot Cori Gauff last time out.

Anisimova is featuring in the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the third time this season and looks set to go one better, albeit things might not be straightforward.

As well as losing her opening set against Gauff, the American trailed second-round opponent Lauren Davis before sparking into life and at 6-1 a bet on her to win from behind again makes appeal.

While Anisimova is starting slowly, Tan has been hitting the ground running, but the girl from New Jersey possesses impressive physical strength and may eventually overpower her opponent.
