Tournament preview

Novak Djokovic cemented his place in the pantheon of tennis history at the beginning of the month by claiming the French Open, becoming the first male player to win each Grand Slam more than once, and now the super Serb is chasing Wimbledon glory for the sixth time.

Last year's tournament was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic so Djokovic has held the All England Club crown for almost two years and the bookies believe he is destined to retain the trophy and draw level with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on 20 Grand Slam titles.

Nadal, shocked by Djokovic at the French Open, will not play in a bid to look after his ailing body but Federer does turn out for what could be a last hurrah on his beloved Centre Court - the Swiss legend turns 40 in August.

Best outright bet

Novak Djokovic

Djokovic has never benefited from the adoration enjoyed by Federer and Nadal but the 34-year-old has refused to let that play on his mind, instead using it to spur him - as evidenced when he snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to deny Federer in the 2019 final and more recently when he downed Nadal at Roland Garros.

He is odds-on to triumph at the All England Club final at the end of the fortnight and those prices may still underestimate a player who has battled to unlikely victories over and over again and who has been handed a kind draw in search of his 20th Slam.

The crowd will be against Djokovic when he faces British wildcard Jack Draper on Monday but that is just one in a line of matches that the Serb is expected to saunter through.

Djokovic may not face a true test until the quarters, where Andrey Rublev or Jannik Sinner look the most likely opponents, and neither of those are proven on grass. And it's the surface where Djokovic's experience advantage should be most apparent - only Federer surpasses him in that regard.

Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas, considered more likely by the layers to win the title than the struggling Swiss maestro, have been denied a year to bolster their Centre Court credentials due to the cancellation of the 2020 grass season. Both are yet to reach the quarter-finals at SW19.

There wouldn't be a more popular winner than Federer - with the possible exception of Andy Murray - but little from the 39-year-old's recent efforts suggest that he can turn back the clock, and the younger brigade may need more time. Simply put, it's Djokovic's to lose.

Best quarter bet

Alex de Minaur to win second quarter

French Open finalist Tsitsipas is the heavy favourite to emerge triumphant from the second quarter but, less than a month after he blew a two-set lead in the Roland Garros final, the Greek looks there to be shot at.

Denis Shapovalov, Andy Murray, Roberto Bautista Agut, Reilly Opelka and British number one Dan Evans are capable of making life tough for the favourite but it's Aussie ace Alex de Minaur who rates the best bet in the section.

De Minaur, mentored by 2002 champion Lleyton Hewitt, is a junior Wimbledon runner-up who showcased his grass-court pedigree in making the Eastbourne final on the eve of the tournament.

He is yet to go this deep at a Grand Slam but De Minaur did reach the last eight at the 2020 US Open and there is every chance he goes far if he can negotiate a tough first-round tie with rising American star Sebastian Korda.

Players to note

Matteo Berrettini

Victory at Queen's prompted a gamble on the Italian, who is closing in on single-figure odds and no longer a value bet at the prices.

Alexander Zverev

Has reached at least the semi-finals in three of the last five Grand Slams and is projected to meet Berrettini in a quarter-final blockbuster.

Andy Murray

The two-time champion was unfortunate to bump into Berrettini at Queen's and could ruffle a few feathers in the second quarter.

Nick Kyrgios

Nobody will want to face the opinionated Aussie, who could trouble some heavy hitters if he can get past Ugo Humbert in round one.
