Among the favourites to win the tournament, Spain nevertheless need to prove themselves again after disappointing last time out.

The need for a good start against Portugal couldn’t be any clearer, especially after 2014’s sensational opening-match thrashing by Holland. If coach Julen Lopetegui and company can win Group B, a clear path to a potential semi-final with Germany would open up.

There is optimism, with the odd stumble in preparation – notably the friendly draw with Switzerland – maybe having helped to nip in the bud any overconfidence. Lopetegui has done a terrific job in moving on from the golden generation, making players such as Isco, Thiago Alcantara and Koke central to his plans.
