Following a shambolic qualification campaign, during which three coaches were used, things got worse for Argentina after they had booked their place in Russia.

Jorge Sampaoli’s men went down to heavy defeats against Nigeria (4-2) and Spain (a 6-1 thrashing in March), throwing their preparation into disarray. It appeared to confirm suspicions that Argentina lack the defensive resources for their coach’s bold, high- pressing gameplan.

The few weeks they have together on the training field will be crucial. Some in Europe rate Sampaoli as the best of all the World Cup coaches, but few in Argentina share that view, so his reputation is on the line.
