Race preview

Saturday belonged to Ferrari at the Circuit of the Americas but bookmakers expect new double world champion Max Verstappen to turn the tables in tonight's United States Grand Prix.

It'll be prime time viewing in the UK & Ireland, and those tuning in could be treated to a spectacle, judging from the clues in qualifying.

Carlos Sainz edged out his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc to claim only his second career pole position. Leclerc described his final lap using four letters and also has a ten-place grid drop to contend with, having exceeded his allowance of engine parts.

Verstappen had to settle for third on a weekend when Red Bull have looked perhaps more vulnerable than at any point since the summer break, but the Dutchman is still a heavily odds-on favourite to take his 13th win of the season.

Lewis Hamilton is running out of chances to keep up his record of winning a race every year of his career, but he has his best chance for some time in Texas.

The seven-time champ starts third after Leclerc's penalty and a similar one for Sergio Perez.

That should be close enough for Hamilton to exploit his Mercedes' characteristic of going much faster in races than in qualifying. He'll be hoping Sainz can stay ahead of Verstappen in the early stages and hold him up so that Hamilton can stay within striking distance.

Barring mechanical gremlins it's hard to see Verstappen not winning, but Hamilton looks a decent bet without the Dutchman given that tyre longevity - Mercedes main strength - should be particularly valuable at this circuit.

Aston Martin have seen each of their drivers pick up a sixth-place finish in the last two races, and Lance Stroll could keep the run going tonight.

The Canadian starts fifth after a superb qualifying performance and the car has shown eye-catching pace all weekend.
