Abu Dhabi Grand Prix preview

One year on from the most controversial finish to a Formula 1 season in living memory, F1 heads back to Abu Dhabi to wrap up a far less dramatic 2022 campaign.

Max Verstappen snatched the title from under the nose of Lewis Hamilton on the last lap under the lights at the Yas Marina Circuit 12 months ago but the defence of his world championship has been far more straightforward.

The Dutch driver has been untouchable for large swathes of the season, achieving a record-breaking number of wins and points behind the wheel of the all-conquering Red Bull.

However, Red Bull were given a reminder that they can't rest on their laurels last time out in Brazil when Mercedes secured their maiden success of the year with a George Russell-led one-two.

The Silver Arrows had been threatening a win for a while and bookmakers have reacted by making Verstappen odds-against to win a race for the first time since F1's summer break.

Verstappen has won the last two races at Yas Marina but it's not a circuit that entirely suits the current Red Bull, and the same goes for a Mercedes team that has seen performance levels drop at high downforce tracks.

That leaves the door ajar for Ferrari to finish a frustrating season with a flourish at a big price. The Scuderia have an excellent aerodynamic package and have less to worry about with tyre degradation on a track that goes easier on the rubber.

Ferrari's strength all year has been qualifying, claiming 12 of the 21 pole positions on offer, and a good Saturday performance has regularly translated to a successful Sunday in Abu Dhabi, where the last seven races have been won by the driver starting in pole.

Ferrari should not be underestimated on a weekend when F1 bids farewell to former Scuderia driver Sebastian Vettel.

The four-time world champion is retiring at the end of the season and can sign off in style with a fifth top-ten finish in his last six starts.
