Weekend preview

Despite having wrapped up his second world championship at the previous race, Max Verstappen’s hunger was not diminished as he stormed to his 13th win of the season in Texas last weekend.

The Dutch master is just 4-7 for a record 14th win of the campaign in this weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix.

In the US, Verstappen had looked on course for a comfortable win until a slow pitstop dropped him behind Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc with 20 laps to go, but the Red Bull driver managed to get his nose back in front with six laps to spare.

It was the closest Hamilton has come to winning a race this season, and it will be sobering to realise that even with a faultless performance and a mistake from Red Bull he still could not defeat Verstappen.

Hamilton trails his Mercedes teammate George Russell by 20 points, but the seven-time world champion has recovered well after a troubled start to the season and leads Russell 6-0 in qualifying head-to-head since the summer break.

The altitude of the Mexican circuit should also help mitigate the car’s lack of top speed – an Achilles heel this year.

The Circuit Hermanos Rodriguez has been a kind one to Verstappen over the years – he has won there three times – but the Mexico City crowd will be hoping his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez tops the rostrum this year.

The home hero, who has won twice this season, is a 9-2 chance.

After taking pole position in Texas, Carlos Sainz suffered his second consecutive first-lap retirement as he was punted out of the race at the first corner.

The Spaniard is taking time to get to grips with the 2022 Ferrari but is clearly making progress and he could be the forgotten man in the field. At 14-1, he could be a bit of early value for Sunday’s race.
