Race preview

Max Verstappen became the first driver to win 14 races in a single season with his victory in Mexico last time out, and the Red Bull driver is a warm order to extend the record further in this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix.

The Dutch double world champion is the first to point out that his feat was aided by the sheer number of events in this year's calendar, but the fact he has won eight of the last nine grands prix illustrates his level of dominance this year.

The 21st and penultimate race of the season takes place in Sao Paulo and for the third time this season the grid for Sunday's main event will be decided by a 100km Sprint on Saturday.

On paper, that adds a degree of uncertainty, but as Verstappen won the sprints in Italy and Austria this season, bookmaker confidence in him is understandable.

Something that could affect the outcome is the weather, with showers of varying severity forecast for the whole weekend.

Verstappen is not averse to racing in the rain, but the driver with the best record on a wet track this season is his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez.

The Mexican veteran has two wins and two second places from the four races in which wet tyres were used this term.

Perez arrives in fine form after finishing third in front of his adoring home crowd last time out and is one of the few drivers with something to fight for as he sits just five points ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in second place in the championship.

Red Bull have stated that their goal for the rest of the season is to secure the runners-up spot for their second driver. It's unrealistic to expect Verstappen to wave his teammate through, but the pair have recorded five 1-2 finishes this season and Perez is worth an each-way bet in the outright market.

Lewis Hamilton overcame two penalties to score a sensational victory in Brazil last year and is second favourite for what would be his first victory of this season.

The seven-time world champion has finished second to Verstappen in the last two races, having used a different strategy than the Dutchman.

However, his odds seem to be a bit of an overreaction given there's nothing to suggest he would have done any better using more conventional tyre tactics, while he was helped in Mexico by Ferrari getting their set-up completely wrong.

Mercedes have shown more in practice than most other teams and the Silver Arrows look value to top the opening session.

It won't be a regular first practice session, with qualifying coming on the same day, but Hamilton and George Russell have both been top dog in a Friday session during the last four race weekends.
