The sixth event in the LIV Golf series starts in the early hours of Friday morning - the first time the Greg Norman-led circuit has teed up in Asia.

LIV Golf Bangkok leads a fortnight of LIV action in Asia, with LIV Golf Jeddah taking place next week at Royal Greens GC.

Steve Palmer's top tip

Cameron Smith 9-2

Market leaders have been dominating on the LIV Golf circuit, which is understandable given the lack of draw bias from a shotgun start and the enormous class edge the best players have over most of the field.

Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith have won the last two LIV Golf events - and the next fortnight could see LIV's most dynamic duo pocket most of the cash again.

Johnson will be looking forward to next week's Jeddah event at a track where he has twice won the Saudi International on the DP World Tour, but this week the giant Carolinian may have to play catch-up behind his rival Smith.

The Open champion has become a household name and it is easy to forget that his career started on the Asian Tour. In 2014, Smith cut his teeth mixing between the Asian Tour and the Australasian Tour, getting a handle on the grainy greens of Asia.

Smith became an Asian Tour leaderboard regular and his PGA Tour debut came in Asia - in the 2014 CIMB Classic in Malaysia. He tied fifth in that event to showcase his talent to a wider audience, then was fifth again in the 2017 CIMB. Smith's form figures in the CJ Cup in Korea - the other PGA Tour event in Asia - were 3-7-3.

Smith has the edge over Johnson and Joaquin Niemann in Asian conditions - and Stonehill appears a layout the Aussie should love. With loads of room off the tee, this great iron-player should get the chance to attack pins. He is arguably the best putter in the world and well equipped for what should be a low-scoring event.

Next best bet

Phachara Khongwatmai 200-1

The two Thai players in the field could be inspired to bustle up Smith and Co this week. Phachara Khongwatmai is thrilled to have the opportunity to play for a $4million cheque in his homeland and could threaten the places.

Khongwatmai, who is used to the hot, humid weather and the quirky greens, won on the Thailand Tour at the age of 14, then on the Asian Development Tour at 15. The prodigy, still only 23, will fancy his chances of defeating some rare Asian visitors this week.

Other selection

Sadom Kaewkanjana 125-1

A Thailand Tour victory at the age of 19 - when he was still an amateur - showed that Sadom Kaewkanjana had a bright future. He has since followed up with two Asian Tour triumphs and the 24-year-old is bursting with potential.

Kaewkanjana made a barnstorming Open Championship debut in July, finishing 11th at St Andrews, and he is clearly good enough to feature on the LIV Golf Bangkok leaderboard.

LIV Golf Chicago 1 C Smith (5-1), T2 D Johnson (5-1), P Uihlein (150-1), 4 S Garcia (30-1), 5 J Niemann (15-2)

Course type Parkland

Course overview Stonehill is owned by the second-richest man in Thailand (Sarath Ratanavadi) and the billionaire's playground is uncharted terrain to the vast majority of this field. It was designed by Kyle Phillips and opened this summer. It is an open track, with generous fairways and sparse sets of trees, but there is lots of water to punish the seriously errant

Weather forecast Hot and humid, with hardly any breeze, and a thunderstorm threat every afternoon

Type of player suited to the challenge This fresh, lush, soft turf seems made for big-hitters to make merry. This seems a young, exposed, vulnerable layout

Key attribute Power

Spotlight insight Only one of the five LIV Golf events has been won by an American
