Well-fancied English duo Eddie Pepperell and Matt Wallace set the pace in the early stages of the Portugal Masters, the Ryder Cup rejects both opening up with a seven-under-par 64 on the first morning at the Victoria Course.

Pepperell and Wallace, 22-1 and 30-1 respectively ante-post, both came close to getting a place on Thomas Bjorn's European team to face the United States in Paris next week. Missing out on the Ryder Cup has done nothing to dent their form. Sergio Garcia carded a 66.

Second-round threeball punters should consider Jordan Smith, who made six birdies in a 68 and appears to be back in decent nick. Smith looks a value outsider for his 1.40pm contest against Pepperell and Andrew Johnston.
