Second-round preview

Jon Rahm cemented his position as Spanish Open favourite by opening up with a five-under-par 66 in round one at Club de Campo de Madrid, the general ante-post 3-1 chance shortening to 9-4.

Rahm opened with four pars before turning on the style, but still ended the day three shots behind Norwegian youngster Kristian Krogh Johannessen, who scooted along the Madrid layout in just 63 blows. Johannessen carded an eagle two at the 15th.

Sergio Garcia posted a 69 in the afternoon to lay a solid foundation for the week, while Rafa Cabrera-Bello – the other Spaniard prominent in the pre-tournament betting – got off to a flyer by matching Rahm's morning 66.

Rahm tees off in the marquee afternoon match, alongside Cabrera-Bello and Adri Arnaus, scheduled for 1pm UK and Ireland time. Given the tension that is likely to be in the shoulders of Arnaus as he chases his maiden European Tour title, and that Cabrera-Bello is prone to going into his shell under pressure, the odds-against quotes about Rahm winning the threeball are appealing.

Large crowds can be expected to follow the all-Spanish trio in round two and Rahm, the defending champion, seems by far the most likely to rise to the occasion.
