Season preview

Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard ran away with the Scottish Premiership top goalscorer award last season, firing in 22 goals in 27 league appearances, and he is a worthy favourite to retain his crown.

The explosive Frenchman finished nine ahead of his nearest pursuer Jermain Defoe, who is set to miss the start of the season with a hamstring injury.

At 22, Edouard is still improving and his side provided the top four in last season’s assist table, so he looks sure to be presented with a number of goalscoring opportunities.

That said, with the transfer window open until October and plenty of interest in the prolific youngster, 9-4 is short enough and Hibernian’s Christian Doidge and Dundee United’s Lawrence Shankland are interesting each-way alternatives.

Doidge took time to get going at Easter Road following a move from Forest Green but he still contributed 18 goals in 38 matches across all competitions, 12 of which came from just 25 league appearances.

That was enough to see Doidge hit the frame in last season’s scoring charts and the proven marksman, who had a shots-on-target ratio of 65 per cent, should again figure prominently, particularly if finding chemistry with new arrival Kevin Nisbet.

Shankland’s goalscoring heroics over the last few seasons at Dundee United and previously at Ayr saw interest in him rocket, but manager Micky Mellon insists his better players are heading nowhere, so he must enter calculations.

The 24-year-old netted 29 times in 35 games as Dundee United eased to the Championship title last term, having scored 34 and 29 in two previous campaigns at Somerset Park.

Shankland has subsequently been capped twice by Scotland, which includes netting in the 6-0 thrashing of San Marino at Hampden Park, and there is no reason to believe he won’t cope with the hike in grade.
