Match preview

Steve Clarke insists he's none the wiser whether a pair of draws from Scotland's opening double-header represents two points gained or four points dropped, but he's acutely aware that nothing less than three points will do against the Faroes.

The Faroes are no longer Europe's whipping boys – they are up to 107th in the world rankings, 60-odd places up on their nadir more than a decade ago – and they are already off the mark in Group C courtesy of a 1-1 draw in Moldova.

They lost 3-1 in Austria on Sunday night and have won a handful of games over the last few years, albeit against Malta and Andorra.

But at Hampden Park the Scots simply have to win to stay in the hunt for a trip to Qatar next year and while that adds an element of pressure of its own, their current squad really ought to be good enough to win well.

The Scots have looked decent for periods of both their stalemates, a 2-2 draw with Austria and a 1-1 draw in Israel. Against Israel on Sunday they could have been buried by half-time but Clarke made tweaks and the upshot was a wholesale improvement.

The Faroes are going to sit in and defend, so the onus is on Scotland's runners from deep to deliver and in Southampton's Stuart Armstrong they boast the type of player who should be running the show.

He might score a goal too and his price to score at any time in the match appeals more than Scotland's 90-minutes quote.

Key stat

Both teams have scored in the Faroes' last five internationals.
