Next England manager betting and Gareth Southgate odds: Pressure grows on boss

There were many fans calling for the head of Gareth Southgate after England's humbling 4-0 defeat at the hands of Hungary and the odds suggest they will get their wish - but only after the World Cup.

Coral are 1-2 from 5-2 that Southgate has vacated his position by the end of the year with the Three Lions boss 6-4 to still be England manager in 2023, while Ladbrokes are 1-2 his last match comes at the Qatar World Cup.

The World Cup final is on December 18 and England will be aiming to go deep into the tournament, although Southgate's contract runs through to the European Championship in 2024.

However, the goodwill built up from a semi-final appearance at the last World Cup and final appearance in last summer's European Championship has slowly eroded during a poor Nations League campaign, which sees England facing a fight to avoid relegation.

The only goal scored during four winless games came via the penalty spot and this is unquestionably Southgate's most difficult spell since he replaced Roy Hodgson in 2016.

Hills and Ladbrokes are 4-1 that Southgate is replaced before the World Cup - an outcome which seems more unlikely than those odds suggest - but he will need to do much more than qualify from a group containing Wales, USA and Iran to quieten the doubters.

Ladbrokes are betting on Southgate's eventual replacement, with Brighton boss Graham Potter the 7-2 market leader from Newcastle's Eddie Howe at 7-1.

Mauricio Pochettino comes next at 10-1, although these markets can be quite volatile with the flavour of the month often jumping to the front of the betting.

Dean Smith, now with Norwich, was favourite when doing well at Aston Villa.
