Preview

Iberian neighbours Spain and Portugal face off in a high-profile Euro 2020 warm-up contest on Friday and both will be keen to avoid defeat ahead of the finals.

Both sides will have their sights set on Euros glory this summer and since exiting at the last-16 stage of the 2018 World Cup, they have lost only five games between them.

Spain coach Luis Enrique has done a good job of moving on from the players who helped La Roja win three successive major tournaments between 2008 and 2012 and bring through the next generation of Spanish stars.

A 6-0 win over Germany last November was a standout performance but some underwhelming showings since suggest Spain still have some work to do.

The defensive solidity that served them so well in qualifying has gone array of late with La Roja conceding in five of the last six outings.

A potent Portugal attack, who have netted two or more goals in 14 of their last 19 games, could therefore cause Spain a few issues but they will need to be on song at the back themselves given they have kept just one clean sheet in their last five.

With that in mind, the pair look difficult to split in Madrid this evening.

In-form Italy are quietly fancied to do well at this summer’s tournament and they extended their unbeaten run to 26 games by thrashing San Marino 7-0 last week.

Goals should be harder to come by for Roberto Mancini’s men on Friday though as they take on another Euros finalist, Czech Republic.

Only one of the Czechs’ last seven matches has produced three or more goals, while Italy have kept clean sheets in ten of their last 11.
