World Championship day 13 preview

Fireman Alan Soutar has extinguished the title hopes of two seeded players at Alexandra Palace and can douse a third by taking care of German giant Gabriel Clemens in round four of the World Darts Championship.

The fearless firefighter from Arbroath showed no respect for Daryl Gurney in round two by demolishing the Northern Irishman in straight sets.

And when asked questions by ninth seed Danny Noppert in round three, Souts had all the answers as he fought back from two sets down to win 4-2.

He reeled off 12 of 13 legs to see off a shell-shocked Noppie with a stunning display of consistent scoring and major-league finishing as he hit exactly half of his 26 attempts at double.

Darts fans all knew Soutar was a danger man from the unseeded ranks and the likeable Scot is showing his mettle and looks well worth supporting at evens against the erratic Clemens.

The German has also been playing well, recording a 3-0 win over William O'Connor and then coming from 3-2 down and surviving match darts to pip Jim Williams.

But Clemens' performances at the Palace are in contrast to his form over 2022 which hasn’t been anything to write home about, featuring a string of first-hurdle falls in previous TV majors.

Clearly he's done things right against O'Connor and Williams but that doesn't mean he will necessarily perturb the seemingly unflappable Soutar.

The layers have seen hardly any maximums thrown by either Kim Huybrechts or Dimitri van den Bergh which means they've set a low bar for match 180s in the all-Belgian skirmish.

Huybrechts and Van den Bergh have both played twice and each has hit five 180s in those four contests.

Yet these are two players who historically have no trouble leathering the treble-20 bed and on tour this year have been hitting it fairly mercilessly. Van den Bergh averages a max every 3.4 legs, Huybrechts one every 5.4.

So when you're offered 23-20 that there are 12 or more maximums, given the potential from both men and the likelihood of a match that goes to at least six sets, it's hard to ignore.

Michael Smith against Joe Cullen looks the tie of the day, a battle between two big-hitters who got to the last 16 in very different ways. After Cullen blasted Damon Heta off the stage 4-0 on Wednesday night, Smith had to come back from 3-1 down to pip Martin Schindler 4-3 in a thriller.

Smith has won three of their four meetings this year, most recently in the last eight of the Grand Slam, a 16-15 affair which illustrates quite how closely matched these two probably are.

Sharing top-of-the-bill status is the all-Dutch dust-up between Michael van Gerwen and Dirk van Duijvenbode, especially if Aubergenius can show the fighting spirit which saw him survive five match darts to beat Ross Smith in an epic on Thursday.
