Stage two reaction and stage three preview

After Julian Alaphilippe's opening day heroics, Mathieu van der Poel outshone him to take yellow on Sunday at the Tour de France.

Stage two came to life when the Dutch debutant attacked on the first of the peloton's two ascents of the Mur-de-Bretagne, before breaking clear not once but twice in the final to seal his maiden Tour victory.

With his win came an eight-second lead in the general classification and the likelihood that he'll stay in yellow until Saturday's first mountain stage.

After the excitement of the weekend, expect something more sedate on Monday.

The peloton stays in Brittany for a 182.9km route between Lorient and Pontivy and stage three looks destined to end in a sprint.

All being well, it should be Caleb Ewan's to lose and he is rightly priced up as the 5-4 favourite.

Sam Bennett's absence means the Australian is the favourite to win the green jersey and he'll be determined to grab a sixth career Tour win.
