Stage nine preview

Tadej Pogacar was just 2-5 to retain his Tour crown at the start of yesterday’s stage and ended the day a 1-14 shot as he claimed the yellow jersey thanks to a solo attack on the first day in the mountains.

Dylan Teuns won the stage but Pogacar’s late surge 30km out brought him fourth place, 49 seconds behind Teuns.

Pogacar now leads Belgium’s Wout van Aert by one minute and 48 seconds in the general classification race.

The Slovenian's performance did serious damage to his general classification rivals and he could put the result beyond doubt on stage nine.

Today’s stage is the stiffest test yet with five categorised climbs in the Alps and the first HC category ascent of the race.

The stage finishes on the Montee de Tignes and strong climber Pogacar will no doubt aim to extend his lead.

The 22-year-old is the 3-1 favourite to win the 149.9km stage nine, while Michael Woods, who took third place on Saturday, is a 14-1 chance.
