Stage preview

How would you sleep knowing you were a 40.7km ride away from winning the Tour de France?

Fortunately for Jonas Vingegaard, his lead of 3mins 21 secs in the general classification means he should at least get some shuteye but there is nowhere to hide in the 'race of truth' and after almost three weeks of racing, he'll still need to strain every sinew to ensure he doesn't slip up.

The route between Lacapelle-Marival and Rocamadour is unusually long for this point in the Tour and will suit those who have been able to hold something back.

World time-trial champion Filippo Ganna fits that profile and will relish the rolling route, especially as there are two climbs towards the end that could hurt less powerful riders.

Ganna's presence in the break has been notable in recent days and after failing to fire on the stage one TT in Copenhagen, he will have earmarked the penultimate stage of this year's race as the perfect chance to take his first Tour win.

A rider who has enjoyed a different Tour is Wout van Aert, who has turned the points classification into a procession and is chasing a third stage win of the race - he's also been second four times and was third atop Hautacam on Thursday.

The Belgian won last year's stage 20 time-trial and backed it up the following day by scoring on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

Wonderwout's exploits on all terrains, both individually and in support of Jumbo-Visma teammate Vingegaard, have been exceptional, while he also helped Christophe Laporte to victory on Friday. His irrepressible style means he won't be holding anything back.
