Stage 15 Preview

The sprinters finally have a stage to look forward to on Sunday as the peloton heads south from Rodez to Carcassonne.

On Saturday Michael Matthews was first over the line following the steep climb up to Mende airfield. The Aussie, who had been overtaken on the final ascent, drew clear of Alberto Bettiol to claim his first Tour de France stage win since 2017.

Tadej Pogacar failed in his bid to eat into Jonas Vingegaard’s general classification lead as the Danish yellow-jersey holder kept tabs on the two-time Tour de France hero.

It is a different story on the 202.5km-long stage 15 with the final climb, the second of two category-threes along the route, cresting around 50km from the finish.

This will be the second time in as many years that Carcassonne has hosted a Tour finish. Mark Cavendish equalled Eddy Merckx's record of 34 stage wins there in 2021 and another bunch sprint is likely.

Fabio Jakobsen and Dylan Groenewegen will be hunting their second victories of this year's Tour, having won the second and third stages, respectively.

Green-jersey wearer Wout van Aert is also likely to be in the mix but after a week of infiltrating the breakaway to boost his advantage in the points classification, even 'Wonderwout' may struggle to match Jakobsen and Groenewegen.

The latter's Team BikeExchange–Jayco tried to set him up on Friday but failed to reel in the break, while the former's Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team will be keen to show their lead out can be just as effective as it was in 2021.

With the Pyrenees looming at the start of next week, this is a golden opportunity for the sprinters to have their say on the race.
