Stage 13 preview

The French riders always aim to excel on the Bastille Day stage of the Tour de France but instead it was Britain that ruled on Alpe d’Huez on Thursday as Tom Pidcock soared to a sensational triumph on the most famous ascent in cycling.

The 22-year-old Olympic mountain bike champion, who was 66-1 for stage honours, rode clear of a five-man break and through the sea of fans to win the queen stage with veteran compatriot Chris Froome taking an admirable third place.

Behind them Tadej Pogacar, a day after suffering huge losses in the first Alpine test, launched a couple of late attacks but new leader Jonas Vingegaard countered them with ease and they finished together.

The Dane leads Pogacar by 2mins 22secs with Geraint Thomas, who kept tabs on the big two, four seconds back in third. Bet365 go 2-7 Vingegaard, 3-1 Pogacar, 16-1 Thomas and 66 bar.

Two stunning days in the mountains are followed on Friday by a far less undulating route, but it is by no means flat, so the breakaway specialists are likely to contest the finish.

That makes it a wide-open betting heat, but a rider who has been keeping a relatively low profile thus far might just break cover.

Matej Mohoric, who has shown in recent times that there are more than two notable Slovenian cyclists, won two stages at last year’s Tour but has yet to make waves this time.

But this route should suit and stage 13 could be his opportunity to shine.
