Preview

The sprinters missed their chance to contest the finish to Stage 12 as a breakaway formed after crosswinds had caused the bunch to fragment, but they should dominate the finish to Friday’s run, which is the last chance for them to shine until next Friday as the race heads uphill into the Pyrenees.

Nils Politt, making up for the morning abandonment of Bora-Hansgrohe team star Peter Sagan, took the honours on Thursday, and well done to any punters who managed to find the German.

The threat of splits caused by wind exists again today but the sprinters and their teams will be more mindful of it so we should expect a bunch finish into the stunning fortress city of Carcassonne.

That would give Mark Cavendish an excellent chance to record his 34th Tour stage win, which would move him alongside current record-holder Eddy Merckx, and he will be favourite to do just that and tighten his grip on the green jersey competition.

The Manx legend leads that by 59 points and is around 8-13 to keep the green jersey all the way to Paris on Sunday week.
