Stage preview

Adam Yates clung on to the yellow jersey for another day on Saturday but his Tour de France rivals are only three seconds adrift after a fascinating eighth stage.

France's Nans Peters took stage honours by 47 seconds from his fellow escapee Toms Skujins, but the real action was taking place further down the mountain.

Tadej Pogacar was the biggest mover in the overall standings after he reclaimed some of the time he lost in the cross winds on Friday.

However, Thibaut Pinot is out of contention to win the Tour after being dropped earlier in the day.

It all tees things up perfectly for the final test of the first week which is another big day out in the Pyrenees.

There are two first-category ascents and another three categorised climbs to tackle on the 153km jaunt from Paul to Laruns.

Whether the stage winner comes from the break again or the main contenders will be down to how the Tour protagonists are feeling with Monday's first rest day in sight. But if a group is allowed to go up the road, then Thomas De Gendt may be worth a small each-way interest.

The Belgian tested his legs with an impressive, if futile, solo attack on stage seven and took to Twitter afterwards to say that his form was building.
