Stage One preview

There is a rare Friday start for the 109th edition of the Tour de France, which begins with a pan-flat 13.2km time trial through the streets of Copenhagen.

The first of three stages during Denmark’s Grand Depart, the short course has been designed to show off the delights of the Danish capital and looks tailor-made for a time-trial specialist to prosper.

The best of those in the peloton right now is Ineos Grenadiers’ two-time reigning TT world champion Filippo Ganna.

The Italian has twice taken the leader’s pink jersey on the opening day of the his home Grand Tour, the Giro d’Italia, and he couldn’t be in better form as he seeks to add a yellow jersey to his collection.

Ganna, who will be making his Tour debut, won the time-trial at the Criterium du Dauphine before regaining the Italian TT title, and it is likely that he’ll end Friday in yellow.

Of the overall contenders, Jumbo–Visma’s Olympic time-trial champion Primoz Roglic is the most likely to challenge, while Ganna’s colleague Geraint Thomas, who was victorious on a similar opening stage TT of the 2017 Tour in Dusseldorf, should also show up well.

The 2018 Tour champion displayed his skill against the clock with second place in the time-trial at the recent Tour de Suisse – a race in which he won the general classification.
