Wout van Aert showed he can do just about anything on a bike at the 2021 Tour de France, winning a mountain stage featuring two ascents of Mont Ventoux, a time-trial and then sprinting to victory on the Champs-Elysees.
And after two years of pure sprinters winning the green jersey in Sam Bennett and Mark Cavendish, this year’s route hints that the points classification could belong to a more versatile rider.
Like Peter Sagan in his pomp, Van Aert can more than hold his own in sprint finishes and is able to infiltrate the break when the opportunity arises on mountain stages.
The ability to spot the right move should allow him to play a dual all-action role for Jumbo-Visma, as he’ll be given license to head up the road and hoover up the sprint points before sitting up and waiting to assist Primoz Roglic and Jonas Vingegaard in their pursuit of yellow.
Seven-time points king Sagan returns after retiring through injury last year and is sure to have a game plan, Bennett is back after missing the 2021 Tour and the likes of Caleb Ewan, Fabio Jakobsen and Jasper Philipsen will also expect to have a say.
However, it looks set to be a gruelling Tour for the speedsters and whoever sticks it out all the way until Paris will deserve to take their chance for victory on the Champs-Elysees.
Even so, Van Aert is sure to still be in the frame and if he can grab the green jersey early, he’s unlikely to relinquish it.
