Milan-San Remo 2022 preview

Once considered the sprinters classic, Milan-San Remo has not lived up to its reputation in recent seasons with the first of cycling's five Monuments going the way of riders who are used to the heat of a Grand Tour GC battle.

Versatile Wout van Aert won this race in 2020 and leads an eclectic betting market in which Aussie speedster Caleb Ewan and two-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar take high rank.

UAE Team Emirates have built a team to help Pogacar, who has been in wonderful form to start the year, claiming the GC at the UAE Tour and Tirreno-Adriatico either side of a one-day win at Strade Bianche.

UAE should ensure that this 298km test really gets going long before the usually decisive Poggio climb and that means that the sprinters may again be left to suffer. However, while Pogacar is a big threat, his fellow Slovenian Primoz Roglic looks overpriced.

La Classicissima is not an obvious fit for Roglic, who is expected to ride in support of Van Aert. But he should not be underestimated and, if anything, there's potential for him to give the peloton the slip while others try to keep tabs on his Jumbo-Visma teammate.
