King of the mountains preview

The King of the Mountains classification can be a head scratcher for punters as it can be won by a rider who has targeted the polka dots or as a by-product of general-classification success – as has happened in the last two years courtesy of Tadej Pogacar.

Home hopes Warren Barguil, Julian Alaphilippe and Romain Bardet were the three winners prior to Pogacar, and it could be another Frenchman who joins all the dots this year.

Thibaut Pinot advertised his credentials with a mountain-stage win at the recent Tour de Suisse and in 2015 he conquered the mighty Alpe d’Huez, which returns to the Tour this year on Bastille Day.

Barguil was the last Frenchman to win on France’s national holiday, but it would be no surprise if Pinot made a bold bid for stage honours, and with it mountains points, on July 14.

With his hopes of winning the Tour probably over, the polka dots represent a likely target for likeable Pinot, who could revel in the freedom of not having to worry about maintaining a yellow-jersey bid.
