Return to Munich can bring out the best in Max Marterer

ATP Munich
From 10am Tuesday

Max Marterer enjoyed a fruitful run to the semi-finals of the BMW Open in Munich last year and home support can inspire the German to success against Juan Ignacio Londero in this season’s opening round.

There has been at least one German representative in the final of this event in seven of the last eight years – five of those have gone on to triumph – and there is something about the Munich crowd that brings out the best in their homegrown talent.

Marterer certainly raised his game here last season and although he was forced to retire in the semi-finals of a Challenger event in Italy last week, he was in doubles action on Monday and must believe he is fit enough to do himself justice.

The Nuremberg man won three matches at last season’s French Open, silencing Denis Shapovalov in four sets before being stopped by Rafael Nadal, and if fully-wound up, he would represent excellent value on his favoured slower surface.

Anastasija Sevastova, second favourite behind top seed Karolina Pliskova for glory in Prague, starts her title tilt against Russian teenager Anastasia Potapova and should run out a decisive winner.

Recommendation
M Marterer
