Ducked sharply right start, hampered rivals start, took keen hold, soon midfield, headway over 1f out, switched left and pressed leaders inside final furlong, kept on (jockey said gelding ran too free) (tchd 9/2)
Took keen hold, midfield, steady headway final 110yds, never dangerous (inquiry held into running and riding; jockey and trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of race; vet had nothing to report; jockey said that his instructions were to get gelding settled and find cover early and to obtain best possible placing; he said he has ridden gelding on several occasions and as such knows gelding is a horse with one run and benefits from coming off a strong pace; he said that he jumped out and tried to get cover but it soon became apparent that race was being ran at a slow pace; this was a hindrance to gelding which is best suited by a true gallop; jockey added that due to slow pace of race gelding over-raced in early stages which left gelding flat footed and lose 3 to 4 lengths as tempo increased inside final 2f and he felt gelding was unable to make up this ground in concluding stages and had obtained best possible placing; trainer confirmed instructions were accurate and agreed that race was not run to suit gelding; their explanations were noted) (op 3/1 tchd 11/4)
