Newton Abbot: the one race you do not want to miss on Tuesday
6.50 Newton Abbot
St Austell Brewery Handicap Chase | 2m5f | 5yo+ | Sky
Why is it interesting?
It is a rare treat for jumps fans to see the likes of Nicky Henderson, Paul Nicholls, Colin Tizzard and Philip Hobbs take each other on in June but there is a tasty £22,500 on offer and the big yards rightfully want a shot at this prize.
The form horse is Romain De Senam for the Nicholls team, having won two of his last three starts including a 13-length victory over course-and-distance last time.
Henderson is represented by Pacific De Baune, who shaped well when second at Uttoxeter last month, while talented hurdler Wait For Me returns to chasing for the Hobbs yard.
Sizing Codelco is another interesting contender for team Tizzard. He has been pulled-up on his last two starts but has dipped 1lb below the mark of his last win, which came in a competitive handicap at the Punchestown festival in 2017.
Kentford Heiress seeks her fourth consecutive success for Seamus Mullins and course-and-distance winner Beggar's Wishes completes the line-up.
What do the stats say?
Nicky Henderson has a 29 per cent strike-rate with runners wearing first-time cheekpieces, which boosts the chances of Pacific De Baune.
Beggar's Wishes has only run in one chase over exactly 2m5f – it was his course-and-distance win in October off 4lb higher.
What do the trainers say?
Paul Nicholls, trainer of Romain De Senam
He's been in good form and is quite versatile, he won't mind the ground which ever way the weather goes. He loves the track and with Bryan [Carver] taking a handy 7lb off, I hope he can go well.
Philip Hobbs, trainer of Wait For Me
With all the wet weather this year we've been waiting for a bit of better ground, which we have got, so I'm hoping he can go well back over fences.
Seamus Mullins, trainer of Kentford Heiress
She seems to be in a good vein of form and is a course-and-distance winner. This is a big ask, it's a step up in grade for her. The worry would be the rain, I wouldn't want soft ground but we'll take it as it comes.
What do our tipsters say?
SPOTLIGHT VERDICT
A competitive affair in which any of the six could win, though Beggar's Wishes and Sizing Codelco have more to prove than the others. Romain De Senam might just be vulnerable off a career-high mark and preference is for Wait For Me, who has run so many good races in hot handicap hurdles since he was last seen over fences in 2017 when up against top chasers Elegant Escape and Black Corton.
