'Extraordinary' Captain Scooby to bring up double ton at Yarmouth

Not many horses notch up 200 appearances. But then not many horses have been as sound and enthusiastic as the 11-year-old Captain Scooby, who is set to become only the third horse this century to join the illustrious 200 club at Yarmouth (5.00) on Tuesday, just over 24 hours after finishing 12th of 13 at Windsor on Monday.

For most horses you would assume their participation to be unlikely so soon after a recent run. However, Captain Scooby has a remarkable record when turned out quickly. On three occasions he has won having run the previous day, while he has won a further two times with a gap of just two days.

Trainer Richard Guest, who is based in Wetherby, said before Captain Scooby's run at Windsor: "He's won three times after he's run the day before – that must be some sort of record! There have been times when he's run appallingly and then bounced straight out and won.

"He's running at Windsor and he'll come back home – he likes his own stable and his own water – and then the plan is to head down to Yarmouth in the morning. It's only four hours so we won't need to set off too early."

Captain Scooby joined Guest from Richard Whitaker in 2011 and has unsurprisingly become a firm favourite in the yard.

"He's a legend. He's an extraordinary horse and is enthusiastic and as sound as ever," said Guest.

"He gives all the apprentices a ride and everyone loves him."

Captain Scooby, who has won 18 races and earned nearly £90,000 in prize-money, is without a win in 19 starts but showed he can still be competitive when finishing a close-up third at Bath this month. Can he cap his big day with a glorious success?

"He's been a bit unlucky a few times and can still win," said Guest. "He hardly takes anything out of himself when he runs – that's how he's managed to keep going for so long."

Al's Memory will join the 100 Club if taking his chance at Yarmouth (4.30). However, on Monday trainer David Evans said he was an unlikely runner after showing signs of lameness.
