One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch this weekend

ONE TRAINER

Clive Cox

Harry Angel will head Clive Cox's Royal Ascot team next week but the Lambourn-based trainer will run another smart sprinter this weekend in the form of Koditime. The son of Kodiac, who is 11-4 favourite with Paddy Power for the Listed Scurry Stakes, has progressed nicely this term when winning a York handicap and second at Windsor last time but faces the widest draw on Saturday. Given Cox's prodigious skill with sprinters, you can never rule him out.

Cox will have a busy time of it on Saturday with nine runners but you can be sure he will have one eye on next week in a bid to end Harry Angel's losing run at Ascot.

ONE JOCKEY

Frankie Dettori

In a bid to avoid a repetition of a freak accident which saw him ruled out of the royal meeting last year, Frankie Dettori has only two rides this weekend – Weekender in the Listed Sky Bet Grand Cup Stakes at York and Luminate in the Prix de Diane at Chantilly – but will bid to head into Ascot in flying form. Weekender, who finished third behind Magic Circle in the Henry II Stakes at Sandown, is unexposed over the longer distances and could start a scintillating few days for the evergreen jockey, while Luminate will attempt to bounce back from a below-par fifth last time.

ONE HORSE

Cardsharp

With ten runs under his belt as a two-year-old, Cardsharp had a busy time of it but his defeat of subsequent Middle Park and Dewhurst victory U S Navy Flag in a Newmarket Group 2 gave Mark Johnston's team hope of a productive three-year-old campaign.

However, the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum-owned colt has yet to show any hint of his juvenile form, finishing out of the placings in all three starts this term. A five-and-a-half length fifth in a Listed contest last time out has to be of concern but Johnston has given him another chance at Salisbury on Sunday where it is hoped he can get back on track.

ONE RACE

Prix de Diane

The Prix de Diane is the sole Group 1 contest in Europe this weekend and it has attracted a top quality field including the likes of Prix Saint-Alary heroine Laurens, the lightly-raced Shahnaza and dual Guineas third Happily.

Laurens, who has yet to finish out of the top two in her career, bids for a second Group 1 victory in France and, given her tenacity and heart, she will ensure a genuine test for her rivals at Chantilly. Happily has yet to fire this term but the longer trip of a mile and a quarter may bring about more improvement in the sister to Gleneagles.
