'We've been on a very bad run' - trainer hopeful 40-1 shock can turn fortunes
Saturday: Chester
Craig Lidster struggled to find his voice after shouting home Dickieburd, who delivered a shock 40-1 success as the trainer's first runner at the course.
The two-year-old made all in the 5f novice stakes to provide the fledgling trainer with a long-awaited winner, having struck just once before from 40 runners this season.
"It's absolutely brilliant," Lidster said. "I sound a bit hoarse because I've been shouting so much. We've been on a very, very bad run and hopefully this is the start of the horses running well."
Owned by Wendy Burdett, Dickieburd is just the second winner for the North Yorkshire-based trainer, who sent out his first runners in November.
"We thought we were getting there and the horses were fit, but they weren't as fit as we thought they were," Lidster said. "All these owners have stuck by us and put their arms around me and said just keep battling on.
"The horse is named after the owner's dad, so it's probably an emotional one for them too. They'll be watching from the pub."
Listed for Laneqash
Laneqash showed a lethal turn of foot to power from last to first to land the Listed City Plate under David Egan.
The four-year-old was a nose off claiming Group 3 success in May but was a decisive winner back down in Listed level for Roger Varian.
"I was going as fast as I could most of the way and I was still sitting in last," Egan said. "It's great for the horse to bounce back and he's done very well to win."
