'We've always liked him' - 12-year course record broken by impressive newcomer
Saturday: Chester
A week on from Holloway Boy's debut shock at Royal Ascot, another newcomer burst on to the scene with an emphatic victory, with the Declan Carroll-trained Changeofmind breaking a course record.
The 12-1 shot was the only unraced runner of the seven in the 5f maiden but showed promising early speed to get into the lead. The 5-6 favourite Silencer, who was the one to beat on the form of his Windsor Castle seventh, made his challenge but the Sioux Nation colt put up a good fight to win by three-quarters of a length.
He toppled the two-year-old record over the minimum distance that had stood since 2010 with a time of 59.85sec.
Changeofmind kicked off a double for Harrison Shaw and Carroll, who had just one winner since April before Saturday. Their second success came with King Of Tonga, who continued his good run of form in the 5f handicap.
Carroll said of Changeofmind: "He was great today and we've always liked him. He's a smart horse. We don't have any immediate plans for him but we'll have a look over the next week. We won't be in any rush and he's a nice one.
"King Of Tonga has been grand since we've gone sprinting with him. It's been a great day. Any day you get winners is a good day."
Double delight
George Boughey and Pat Cosgrave teamed up for a double. Navello scored in the 5f handicap before Evocative Spark bounced back to form to deny the well-fancied Hebrides in the 7f handicap.
