Top-six finish may be the best battling Baton can achieve in Derby
Quotes of 20 and 25-1 for the Investec Derby look about right for Crossed Baton, who gave John Gosden a record sixth win Wednesday's Investec Blue Riband Trial at Epsom when holding off the late thrust of My Lord And Master.
The 1m2f contest was returned to Listed status after the recent victories of Gosden luminaries Cracksman and So Mi Dar and was another masterclass on how to ride Epsom from Frankie Dettori, who made most of the winner's stall one draw and letting the others play catch up.
Crossed Baton is not certain to line up or get the extra quarter mile of the Investec Derby if he does but, as he showed when giving weight and a beating to a useful type at Kempton on his reappearance, he's a proper grinder and could well finish in the first half dozen if he were to go to post on June 2.
