Derby under consideration after Lone Eagle swoops to impressive victory
Lone Eagle repelled all challengers under a penalty to land the Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Cocked Hat Stakes, with connections set to consider a tilt at the Cazoo Derby.
Last year’s Zetland Stakes winner, who is owned by Ballylinch Stud and Aquis Farm, scored by four lengths and completed a double for Silvestre de Sousa after his earlier success on Dulas in the 7f handicap.
Paddy Power shortened Lone Eagle to 33-1 (from 50) for the Derby, but trainer Martyn Meade said options are open and has another Classic in mind as a main target.
Meade said: “He really did it well – he's a relentless galloper and has all the attributes. The Epsom and Irish Derby are possibilities, and our end game might be the St Leger.”
Smart prospect
It takes a good filly to break her maiden in Listed company on just her second start and Ad Infinitum did just that in the Height Of Fashion Stakes.
The David Simcock-trained three-year-old travelled sweetly on the way to a length victory under Jamie Spencer and is entered in the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot.
She boosted the form of another potential Derby hope for Meade in Gloucestershire, having finished fourth behind him in a maiden at Kempton in December.
Simcock said on Racing TV: “This race had been the plan for a while as sometimes it can be a bit soft as it comes so close to the Oaks and after various trials.
“She’s always been talented and had a nice introduction at Kempton first time.”
Simcock and Spencer completed a 246-1 double courtesy of the Eric Chen-owned Luckiness in the mile handicap.
Oisin Murphy was the third jockey to ride a double, winning on Masekela for Andrew Balding in the 6f novice and Four Adaay for Rod Millman in the 5f handicap.
