'She's seriously nice' - Stan Moore looks to Royal Ascot for winning filly

A big week for Stan Moore started in style when Miss American Pie landed the fillies' novice stakes.

Moore runs his stable star The Wizard Of Eye in the Watership Down Stud Too Darn Hot Greenham Stakes at Newbury on Saturday, but he has another talented type in Miss American Pie, who was ridden by John Egan.

The Lambourn trainer said: "She's a nice filly who has been going really well at home. We thought she'd run well, but we thought the ones who had run might have an experience edge on her.

"We've never taken her away for a gallop but she's just made natural progress. She'll improve buckets from that. She's a scopey filly with a really bright future. She's classy and if she runs at Royal Ascot it will be the Albany.

"She'll be a class act. She's seriously nice and has the right attitude."

Moore, whose winner was 28-1, added: "It's a big week for me and for the yard. We work hard and, touch wood, we're getting the rewards. I'm a Group 1-winning trainer, people forget that."

Quids in

Gary Taylor was all smiles after Winnetka landed division two of the 6f handicap – and that was before he picked up his winnings.

Taylor was speaking on behalf of the International Racing Club, which part-owns the Tony Carroll-trained gelding.

"He won by a street," he said. "We were optimistic and couldn't believe he drifted, so we lumped on.

"There are six of us here today and we've thoroughly enjoyed the day and that's capped it. It's been very good and we got 6-1. He started the day around 100-30, but we don't know why he drifted. I think others must have been fancied and got backed, which pushed our price out.

"He won doing handstands, but when he got blocked in earlier on we were slightly concerned, but he left them for dead when he got a bit of daylight."

Quality from Equality

Equality produced the most impressive display of the afternoon when bolting up in the 5f handicap, delighting the members of Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds, who were on track to roar him home.

"I've always really liked this horse and he'd been working nicely," said trainer Charlie Hills.

"Last year never really came off for him. We ran him at Royal Ascot, but the ground went soft and he didn't seem to handle it. He got away with it today and has done really well over the winter."

Jumping for joy

John Flint, better known for his jumps exploits, is beginning to focus more on the Flat and won division one of the 6f handicap with Vape.

"It was always jumpers, but it's probably 85 per cent Flat at the yard now," he said. "It's easier to train on the Flat – there are less injuries and you can run them more often."

'Pleasant surprise'

Hughie Morrison joked that ex-Newmarket-trained Maksud would have been a cert for a bumper, but he showed more speed than that when winning the 1m2f novice.

"That's a pleasant surprise and fair play to James Stafford of Thurloe Thoroughbreds for buying him," he said.
