Sedgefield: 'It's playing on everyone's minds' - Quinlan critical of new whip rules after winner
Sean Quinlan revealed he would have been suspended for 51 days under the new whip rules last week after riding his 49th winner of the season aboard Onestepatatime in the 3m3f handicap chase.
Quinlan, one of the leading riders in the north, believes more discussions are needed with the BHA, with stewards calling him in on multiple occasions for his hand coming above head height when using the whip.
Quinlan said to Sky Sports Racing: “I’m trying my best and have done this for 20 years, but I’m apparently breaking the new rules with my hand coming above head height. I would have got 51 days suspension last week – I’ve been called in six or seven times.
"I’ve had a few trainers and owners tell me I’m not riding to the best of my ability and it's affecting me a little bit. You’re thinking about it the whole time and it’s playing on everyone's minds in the weighing room. Something needs to be done and we have to keep on discussing it with the BHA and need support from trainers."
The John Wainwright-trained Onestepatatime, owned by Anthony Ross, gained back-to-back course wins by a short head from Elleon.
